State Route 227 to Allegheny River 5.0 miles Class Grad Size
(Area/Volume) Scene/Pol Level I 43/80 Tiny (19/) B/A Mouth of Stream Topographic Maps: West Hickory County Maps: Forest Description: The section is mostly a wild and pretty setting except for clusters of camps about two miles above end. Water was fairly clear with frequent riffles. [Reported 1994] Difficulties: Strainers, tons of them. Included fallen hemlocks, alder sieves, and ironwood. Through out the entire 5.0 miles Shuttle: To find the put-in, from West Hickory travel north on State Route 127 for about 4.5 miles to State Route 227. Turn left/west on State Route 227 and go 1.5 miles to the bridge. To get to the take‑out, return to West Hickory via State Route 127. Just before crossing the Allegheny River, turn right/south on State Route 4002 and go 1.1 miles to the bridge crossing the creek. Alternatively one could paddle upstream on the Allegheny for 1.0 miles and take out at the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission Access Area on river left just downstream of the State Rout 127 bridge in West Hickory. Gauge: None. Normal Wet Period: No available statistics on seasons. Since this section is tiny, it should normally be runnable only after a heavy rain or during spring snowmelt. |
