State Route 711 to Bolivar 5.6 miles Class Grad Size (Area/Volume) Scene/Poll Level I-II 20/40 Tiny
(54/90) B/B Topographic Maps: Rachelwood, Wilpen, Bolivar County Maps: Westmoreland Description: Before putting in, scout the upper 3 miles from the Laurel Valley High School to the junction with Hendricks Creek. This section is tiny and brush choked. Hendricks Creek from the vicinity of Camp Kaufmann may be more suitable, although still tiny. Below the junction the stream is wide, calm, and in a pastoral setting until the outskirts of Bolivar. The last 2 miles contain the steepest gradient with a long rapid of uniform waves and small holes at high water. [Checked 1992] Difficulties: Trees above the junction with Hendricks Creek. The gradient changes suddenly in Bolivar. Shuttle: Put in where State Route 711 crosses the stream. To reach the take-out, go about 0.5 miles southwest on State Route 711. Turn right/northwest onto State Route 1006. Go about 5 miles to a "T" intersection with State Route 259 in Bolivar. Turn right/north. Take out on a Bolivar side street, walk up the railroad, or paddle upstream on the Conemaugh. Gauges: Kingston. A run was okay at a level 6.4 feet (2003 rating table) on the Kingston gauge Normal Wet Period: No available statistics on seasons. Since this section is tiny, it should normally be runnable only after a heavy rain or during spring snowmelt. |
