(Area/Volume) Scene/Pol Level I 7/7 Small B/A Marianna Marianna Topographic Maps: Amity County Maps: Washington Description: This is a narrow, deep, primarily flat-water creek. It flows through a mixed wooded and pastoral valley. [Checked 2001] Difficulties: An occasional strainer Shuttle: Put in by the State Route 221 Bridge, at the intersection with State Route 2020 at Conger. To reach the take-out, follow State Route 2020 to the town of Ten Mile. The take-out is the first bridge on the west side of town. Gauge: Marianna. Run was at level of 2.2 feet. No data on low or high range. Normal Wet Period: Though March or after a heavy rain. B. Ten Mile to
Marianna 6.3 miles Class Grad Size (Area/Volume) Scene/Poll Level I 7/7 Small (100/167) B/A Topographic Maps: Amity, Ellsworth County Maps: Washington Description: This stream is moving flatwater with occasional riffles, small ledges, and a covered bridge. The scenery is very nice except in the town of Marianna. [Checked 2001] Difficulties: In the town of Marianna, there is a 3‑foot dam for a water filtration plant. It can be recognized by the round intake house on the left end of the dam. At reasonable water levels, the dam can be portaged on the right behind the abutment. At higher levels, water may be flowing in this path, forcing a more difficult portage on the left. State Route 2020 runs along side the creek at this point. Stop and scout the dam during the shuttle. Shuttle: Put in at the first bridge west of the town of Ten Mile. Follow State Route 2020 through Marianna. This road enters a "T" intersection with the bridge across Ten Mile Creek on the left. Take out downstream of this bridge. Gauges: Marianna. This gauge should read above 2.2 feet. This corresponds to a flow of 335 cfs. Normal Wet Period: No available statistics on seasons. Since this section is small, it should normally be runnable approximately January through April. C. Marianna to

(150/250) B/A 2.0-?? Topographic Maps: Ellsworth, Mather County Maps: Washington, Greene Description: The stream starts slowly, flowing between channelized but grassy banks through Marianna. It soon enters woods and farmlands. After 3 miles or so it passes under Davis Bridge, a Burr truss covered bridge built in 1889, now closed and in poor repair. Here the pace picks up, with several series of easy Class II rapids alternating with pools. There is usually a 200‑foot wooded cliff on one side and farmlands, houses or woods on the other. The bottom is often smooth bedrock, and fish are plentiful. [Reported 2001] Difficulties: A 3‑foot dam at Deemston should be portaged. The dam is about 200 feet upstream from a steel truss bridge, the first bridge after the covered bridge. At low water, concrete will be showing above water at the right of the dam and in the center. If this is clearly showing, you can land on it and lift over. Otherwise get out upstream from the dam and carry around on either side. The topographic maps show another dam about 1.5 miles downstream from Deemston. It is actually a washed-out, low-water bridge. Numerous reinforcing bars stick up from the remains, but it can be run with caution and good boat control. Shuttle: Put in at the bridge just downstream from Marianna. Follow signs to Clarksville via State Route 2049 and State Route 1013. In Clarksville, turn left on State Route 1011, cross the creek, (the road becomes State Route 2039 at this point), cross under the railroad track, and take out just below the footbridge and the waste water treatment plant. An alternative take-out is available 1.5 miles of flatwater further downstream at the county park and boat ramp. Gauges: Marianna. This gauge should read above 2.0 feet. This corresponds to a flow of 275 cfs. The State Route 1011/2039 bridge has several rows of tiles near the water line. No more than 5 should be showing for a good run. Normal Wet Period: No available statistics on seasons. Since this section is small, it should normally be runnable approximately January through April. D. Clarksville to
East Bethlehem 2.5 miles D. Clarksville to East Bethlehem Class Grad Size (Area/Volume) Scene/Poll Level A Pool Medium (388/647) D/B Topographic Maps: Mather County Maps: Washington, Greene Description: The creek widens considerably here and powerboat activity among the several marinas picks up in April. [Checked 2001] Difficulties: Several marinas for docking powerboats between Clarksville and the Monongahela. Shuttle: The put-in is in Clarksville along State Route 2039, just below the foot bridge and waste water treatment plant. The take-out is just upstream from the railroad bridge, just before the creek enters the Monongahela. To reach the take‑out, follow State Route 2039 east about 1.5 miles to State Route 88. Turn left/north onto State Route 88. As you are northbound on State Route 88, you will see a phone booth at the end of the last marina before the guardrail starts. Park on the shoulder across from the marina so as not to interfere with their activities. Gauges: Marianna. Normal Wet Period: No available statistics on seasons. Since this section is medium-sized, it should normally be runnable approximately December through May. |
