Topographic Maps: Russell City, Lynch

County Maps: Elk, Forest

Description: This section is a remote headwaters stream in the depths of the National Forest. Unfortunately, it is also in a producing oil and gas field. Numerous wells and pipes are found in the valley but do not detract from the beauty. Whitewater is minor rocky rapids and sharp corners. [Reported 1997]

Difficulties: Trees, pipe crossing on cables.

Shuttle: To get to the put-in, use State Route 66, turn south on a Forest Service road a 0.2 miles east of State Route 948 junction. This Forest Service Road road is marked to Hi-La Fish Hatchery at Pigs Ear. To get to the take-out, return to State Route 66 and turn west to Forest Service Road 131. Turn towards the river at Duhring.

Gauges: Ridgway. This gauge on nearby Clarion River will probably read above 7.0 feet. Check conditions at put-in. Spring Creek at the take-out has additional water from the West Branch, and will not give an adequate indication of conditions.

Normal Wet Period: No available statistics on seasons. Since this section is tiny, it should normally be runnable only after a heavy rain or during spring snowmelt.
