Reynoldsville to Brookville 20.0 miles Class Grad Size (Area/Volume) Scene/Poll Level I-II 8/19 Small (114/190) B/B Topographic Maps: Reynoldsville, Coolspring, Brookville County Maps: Jefferson Description: This is a pleasant wooded stream along a railroad. The upper half has occasional light rapids, which become more frequent on the lower half of the trip. This is very pleasant canoeing with fast current for easy paddling. As you approach Port Barnett there are many chains of curious, tiny, man-made islands in mid-stream. [Reported prior 1975, State Game Lands to Port Barnett checked 1988] Difficulties: A long rock garden (Class II) about a mile above the Fuller Run Road bridge needs quick rock dodging. Shuttle: Put in at the US Route 322 Bridge in Reynoldsville. The banks are steep and slippery. Follow US Route 322 west to where you cross the stream in Brookville. There are several intermediate points for put-ins and take-outs. One is in the middle of the State Game Lands Number 249, where a side road crosses the stream about 2 miles south of US Route 322. Another put-in is where State Route 2025 crosses about 2 miles south of US Route 322. An alternate take-out is about 2 miles upstream of Brookville in Port Barnett. It is located about 100 yards south of US Route 322 on State Route 2023 by a tall freestanding chimney. Gauges: St. Charles. This gauge on the nearby Red Bank will probably read between 4.3 and 6.0 feet (2003 rating table). Check the rapids at Brookville for runnability. This is one of the shallower spots on the run. Normal Wet Period: No available statistics on seasons. Since this section is small, it should normally be runnable approximately January through April. |
