Topographic Maps: Jackson Center, Mercer

County Maps: Mercer

Description: For the first 2.5 miles, this tiny stream twists and turns sharply between eroded silt banks. Overhanging brush is thick in places. Passing under a bridge the creek widens out into a marsh where progress is slow due to thick lilypads. The end of the marsh is marked by three big culverts under the old railroad embankment. From this point to the take-out, about 3 miles, the current picks up a little, but there still is not very much current. [Checked 1998]

Difficulties: Downed trees make a nuisance, but not a hazard since the current is negligible.

Shuttle: Use US Route 19 north of Mercer. The take-out is on State Route 58, at the eastern edge of Mercer.

Gauges: None. Check by looking upstream from the Cornell Road bridge. This is the shallowest part of the marsh.

Normal Wet Period: Since this section is tiny, it should normally be runnable only after a heavy rain or during spring snowmelt.
