A. Clara to Shinglehouse 9.0 miles Class Grad Size
(Area/Volume) Scene/Pol Level I 11/15 Tiny A/A Topographic Maps: Oswayo,
Shinglehouse County Maps: Potter Description: The first two miles are fast water on a narrow stream through woods, with occasional strainers. Below Millport it is surprisingly strainer free for a creek with a lot of bends. It becomes a Class B pool at the take‑out point. [Reported 1999] Difficulties: Strainers in the fast water in the first two miles. Shuttle: The put‑in is on Topeka Road (T351) in Clara, just off of State Route 44. To reach the take out go north on State Route 44 to Shinglehouse. The take‑out is on State Route 44 just west of Shinglehouse. Alternately, one can extend the trip by 5.0 miles by putting in upstream in Oswayo. Go south from Clara on State Route 44 for about 2.0 miles. Bear left/east on State Route 244 at Coneville, and continue to Oswayo. Gauge: None. Look at the water level on the upstream side of the Topeka Road Bridge. If that is passable, then this section will be okay. Normal Wet Period: No available statistics on seasons. Since this section is tiny, it should normally be runnable only after a heavy rain or during spring snowmelt. B. Shinglehouse to Toll Gate Corner, NY 13.3 miles Class Grad Size

Bullis Mills, Portville NY County Maps: Potter, McKean, Alleghany NY, Cattaraugus NY Description: A pleasant, wooded run, with occasional easy riffles alternating with swift water and flat pools. Plenty of wildlife. [Reported 1999] Difficulties: Possible strainers on the outside of bends. Shuttle: The put-in is in Shinglehouse on Low Street, which is just downstream of the State Route 44 Bridge. To reach the take out, head north on State Route 44. When it tees into NY State Route 417, turn left (west). Continue on NY 417 to Toll Gate Corner. Turn left/south on NY 305 and either take out at the bridge over Oswayo Creek, or continue 0.2 miles to Gleason Hollow Road and turn right/west and take out on the Allegheny River near the intersection. Gauge: None. Check for water at the Shinglehouse Bridge. The level is the same through out the section. Normal Wet Period: No available statistics on seasons. Since this section is small, it should normally be runnable approximately January through April. |
