Topographic Maps: West Point (Ohio), East Liverpool North (Ohio)

County Maps: Columbiana (Ohio)

Description: Once past the streamside camps and cottages near Pine Ridge Camp, the stream enters a remote valley. The valley floor is covered with trillium and sycamore, and the hillsides to the north and south are sheer. This is a very pretty valley. Combining these sections with the lower section down to the Ohio river would make an ideal canoe-camping trip. There is primitive group camping available at the Gretchen's Lock area of Beaver Creek State Park. [Checked 1994]

Difficulties: Just around the bend after a pair of power transmission lines cross the river there is a dam with two slots that can be filled by movable gates. If the gates are not in place and if the slots are not blocked by trees, they can be run. Alternately carry around on the right. As with any small stream, strainers are always a possibility.

Shuttle: To get to the put-in, leave State Route 11/30 at West Point. Go south on old State Route 45 for about 0.5 miles to the first right onto 448A. Follow this road about 0.25 miles and put in at church parking lot on the right, just before the bridge. To get to the take-out follow US Route 30, either old or new, to Ohio Route 7. Turn north on Ohio Route 7 and go about 2.5 miles to the Beaver Creek State Park. Take-out is at the Gaston's Mill area. The trip can be lengthened by using any of various access areas west of West Point along Ohio Route 518. The Ohio Route 164 crossing in Gavers Village is about 10 miles upstream of West Point.

Gauges: East Liverpool. This gauge downstream on Little Beaver Creek will probably read above 4.3. Call Beaver Creek State Park or Ohio Canoe Tours. See Section A of the Little Beaver Creek for phone numbers.

Normal Wet Period: No available statistics on seasons. Since this section is small, it should normally be runnable approximately January through April.
