Topographic Maps: Cornplanter bridge, Westline, Lewis Run

County Maps: McKean

Description: The creek runs through mixed hardwood and hemlock forest. The bed of coarse gravel and cobbles periodically forms shoals that produce small riffles. Several short stretches of the shoreline are fenced off for fish propagation be the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission. They have said (1989) that it is okay to canoe through these areas. The Forest Service roads on either side are lightly traveled and unobtrusive. [Checked 1999] { TC \f p \l 1 "Kinzua Creek - Several short stretches of the shoreline are fenced off for fish propagation be the Pennsylvania Fish Commission.  They have said (1989) that it is okay to canoe through these areas." }

Difficulties: An occasional strainer.

Shuttle: The short route showing on the topographic maps is for four wheel drive vehicles with chains during the time of the year that the creek is likely to have water. The put‑in at Guffey is about 0.3 miles west of US Route 219 on T573. T573 is about 1.3 miles south of Tally Ho. To reach the take‑out, go back to US Route 219 and turn right/south onto US Route 219. At the intersection with US Route 6, turn right/west and go to Kane. In Kane turn right/north on State Route 321. Follow State Route 321 until you see the reservoir. Turn left just before you reach the bridge. This leads to the take‑out.

Gauge: Guffey. This gauge should read above 3.1 feet (2003 rating table). This corresponds to a flow of 137 cfs. If the shallows upstream of the US Route 321 Bridge are passable then this section should be okay. If the Kinzua Dam pool level is below 1320, you will have flowing water to the take‑out below the bridge.

Normal Wet Period: The Guffey gauge is above 3.1 feet 16% of the time.
