Topographic Maps: Smithfield, Masontown

County Maps: Fayette

Description: Georges Creek is a fun run. There are lots of Class I rapids with no long pools between them. The drop of 20 feet per mile is continuous throughout and the water just keeps on moving along. Although the creek passes through some remote areas, there are also stretches with trash along the bank. [Reported 1997]

Difficulties: As always on small streams, the potential for trees down and strainers is present.

Shuttle: The put-in is where the creek crosses US Route 119 about 1.5 miles south of Smithfield. Continue south on US Route 119. If you have the maps, take a right at Locust Hill, go about a 0.3 miles to Tomcat Hollow Road and turn right/north. The third crossing of the stream is the take-out. Without the maps, pass through Locust Hill and continue on US Route 119 to State Route 166. Turn north on State Route 166 towards New Geneva. Just after coming down off the Monongahela bluff and immediately after crossing the creek, turn right onto Tomcat Hollow road. This road crosses the creek at the take-out about 0.5 miles from State Route 166.

Gauges: Smithfield. We do not have enough information to report runnable levels on this section.

Normal Wet Period: No available statistics on seasons. Since this section is tiny, it should normally be runnable only after a heavy rain or during spring snowmelt.
