State Route 910 to Allegheny River 11.0 miles Class Grad Size (Area/Volume) Scene/Poll Level I 9/26 Tiny (51/85) C/B-C Topographic Maps: New Kensington West, Glenshaw County Maps: Allegheny Description: A run which could be pretty if it were not so close to town. It is an interesting run, if you can ignore the civilization. The creek winds from level plain, against tall cliffs, through a golf course and camp, into the industrial suburbs of Harmarville. [Reported 1999] Difficulties: Watch for fallen trees. There are also civilized hazards such as dead washing machines and old tires. Just below where Little Deer Creek comes in there is a 3 foot dam composed of rubble. Portage on the left. Shuttle: Put in at either of two bridges on State Route 910. From State Route 8 at Gibsonia, turn east on State Route 910 and go 2.1 miles to the bridge where Middle Road extension intersects from the north, or go 0.5 miles further to the bridge where Martin Road intersects from the south. To get to the take‑out, continue east on State Route 910 to the traffic light at Freeport Road (old State Route 28) in Harmarville. Turn right/south, go 100 yards, turn left, towards the river on Wenzel Drive. The take‑out is the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission Access Area on the downstream side at the mouth of Deer Creek. An alternate take‑out, about 2.5 miles short of the mouth, is the bridge at Rich Hill Road. As 910 begins its decent into the Allegheny valley, turn left/northeast on Rich Hill Road and follow to the bridge. Gauges: Lower, enlarged section of piers of the bridge from State Route 910 to the tank farm should be covered by water. The bridge is near Indianola. Normal Wet Period: No available statistics on seasons. Since this section is tiny, it should normally be runnable only after a heavy rain or during spring snowmelt. |
