Topographic Maps: Hartstown, Conneaut Lake

County Maps: Crawford

Description: The put-in is on open water in a marsh pond, which quickly turns into a zigzag course through lily pads. The first few miles run through swamp and marsh ponds formed by two earthen dikes. Bald eagles live here. There's no defined channel in the swamp, so pick and choose. Look for the thinnest vegetation to get through. There is a lot of wildlife and it is very pretty. A half-mile down, you portage the first dike and relaunch into a second marsh. After portaging the second dike you will relaunch into a small creek. From here to the first bridge the creek is relatively clear. From the first bridge to the take‑out there is a lot of overhanging brush and an increasing number of fallen trees require a portage. [Reported 2001]

Difficulties: On both marsh ponds, look for the enclosed concrete spillway on the dikes for a portage point. After the first bridge some bushwhacking through saplings may be necessary as fallen trees become more frequent.

Shuttle: Put in at the very head of the stream, at the Pennsylvania Game Commission access by the trailer park. This is 0.2 miles east of the intersection of State Route 18 and US Route 322. To get to the take-out, go south on State Route 18 to Atlantic Road just south of Adamsville. Turn left/east and go to the first bridge, which is the take‑out.

Gauge: Greenville. This gauge on nearby Little Shenango River will probably read above 2.0 feet. The shallowest part is the riffles upstream of the Adamsville Road bridge. If this is passable the run will be okay. If the water is Class C, swift flowing, then it is to high.

Normal Wet Period: No available statistics on seasons. Since this section is tiny, it should normally be runnable only after a heavy rain or during spring snowmelt.

Description: The creek starts to widen a little, but fallen trees become more numerous. You will see the remains of tornado damage along the banks. It is a pretty setting in the wood, with some nice hemlock groves. Downstream of Hogan Hill Road at KO Junction, a new dam has been built. As you enter a marsh of standing trees, paddle towards the thinning tree line to reach open water. Head towards the enclosed spillway on the dike to portage. This dike is approximately 40 feet high up sloped banks. Below the dam relaunch on a small creek again. A lot of wildlife abides here. Occasional fallen trees continue to slow your progress until you reach the mouth at Little Shenango River. The first road bridge below the waterway junction is the Werner Road take‑out. [Reported 2001]

Difficulties: There are a lot of fallen trees to go over, under or portage. Where the water starts to pool, follow the drift of the current until you can see the thinning tree line and the exit from the marsh. If the water is high Class C swift flowing, portages could be troublesome.

Shuttle: To get to the put-in from Osgood, go north on State Route 18 for about 4.6 miles. At Atlantic Road turn right/east. The first bridge is the put-in point. To get to the take-out, go south on State Route 18 to Osgood. About 0.25 miles south of Osgood turn left/east and the bridge is in sight.

Gauge: Greenville. This gauge on nearby Little Shenango River will probably read above 2.0 feet.

Normal Wet Period: No available statistics on seasons. Since this section is tiny, it should normally be runnable only after a heavy rain or during spring snowmelt.
