Crabtree 4.0 miles Crabtree to New Alexandria Class Grad Size (Area/Volume) Scene/Poll Level II 9/25 Tiny (19/32) B/B 4.7-?? Topographic Maps: Latrobe, Saltsburg County Maps: Westmoreland Description: This is a tiny stream piercing a minor canyon to join Loyalhanna Creek. The gradient and character is fast and uniform for the 2.0 mile run from the put-in to Loyalhanna Creek. The last 2.0 miles are on Loyalhanna Creek, which is normally in near-flood when Crabtree Creek is runnable. [Reported 1992] Difficulties: Trees, low bridge at mid-run, and mud banks at the take-out in New Alexandria. Shuttle: Put in on a side road about 1 mile from US Route 119 in Crabtree (Turn off US Route 119 at Carbone's Restaurant). Shuttle on US Route 119 to US Route 22 at New Alexandria. Take out at the site of the old bridge upstream of the present US Route 22 bridge. Gauges: None. The Kingston gauge downstream on Loyalhanna Creek will probably be above 4.7 feet (2003 rating table). This corresponds to a flow 1,000 cfs on the Layalhanna. Normal Wet Period: No available statistics on seasons. Since this section is tiny, it should normally be runnable only after a heavy rain or during spring snowmelt. |
