Topographic Maps: Avonmore, Saltsburg

County Maps: Indiana

Description: The creek is in a small valley with a few houses near the start and finish, but rural for the most part. The road is never far away, but is not visible from the water. The last road access is about a mile above the mouth of the stream. One can combine this with 3.5 miles on the Kiskiminetas River and take out in Avonmore. [Reported 1992]

Difficulties: A few strainers on the outside of curves

Shuttle: From Saltsburg, go north on State Route 286. In about 3.3 miles, State Route 3019 will come in from the left. The put‑in is on the right at this place. To reach the take‑out, return to Saltsburg on State Route 286. After crossing the Kiskiminetas turn right/north at the “T” onto State Route 981. At the top of the hill, continue straight on State Route 981 rather than following the main road around to the left. In about 0.2 miles take a right-hand fork. Go another 0.3 miles and turn right/east. Follow this road until you see the mouth of Blacklegs Creek across the Kiskiminetas River. This is the take‑out. If the Kiskiminetas is flowing and you do not think you can make the ferry across the river, or if you just want to add the 3.5 miles of the Kiskiminetas to the trip, then backtrack to State Route 981. Turn left/north and continue to where State Route 156 comes in from the right. Turn right onto State Route 156 and follow it through Avonmore to the river.

Gauge: None. Check the shallows upstream of the State Route 286 Bridge. If this is passable, the run is okay.

Normal Wet Period: No available statistics on seasons. Since this section is small, it should normally be runnable approximately January through April.
